"Wild Hearts"
The Characters
Mickey (Michaela)
Our
storyteller and lead character. A twelve year old who is still more
of a girl than some of her classmates who are getting in touch with
their sprouting womanhood. Her jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirt wardrobe
gives her a tomboy image. Growing up with just her mom and younger brother
has left Mickey a little guarded as to who she lets into her imaginative
and creative self. She is shy and is most comfortable expressing herself
to her pony, Penny. Her dad left when she was five and if a picture
is worth a thousand words, Mickey has not stopped talking since he left,
that’s when she began painting the horses she saw in her dreams,
paintings that reveal her intelligence and complexity.
Holly
Mickey’s
best friend and classmate who aspires to be 16 despite being "trapped"
in a twelve year old body. She is both envious and supportive of Mickey’s
painting and riding. Basically, self-centered, she subjects Mickey to
an endless parade of new outfits and the finest equestrian gear her
affluent parents are always buying her. She enters horse shows hoping
to claim another colored ribbon to decorate her room. They have a healthy
adversarial relationship that seems somewhat superficial at times, but
despite that they are each other’s confidants.
Hunter
Mickey’s
twelve your old soul brother. Though they are destined to discover each
other, the awkward dalliance of courtship gives their emerging relationship
a mutual longing. His looks and talent are evident to everyone but himself.
But we hope he discovers his self- confidence that has been suppressed
at home because of his parent’s total devotion and attention to
Hunter’s younger disabled brother. Hunter has created his own
world in his comic books where rock and roll super heroes derail bandits.
His vulnerable and shy demeanor makes him endearing to girls yet vulnerable
to the bad kids at Tsawwassen Junior High.
Frankie
The new
girl from the big city has little money, little to say and no friends,
but a love for horses gives her a chance at fitting in with the Delta
riding club members. She is the outsider. She finds herself caught between
Holly’s and Mickey’s competitive and jealous behavior toward
her.
Norman
The naughtiest
boy in class loves to get Hunter and others to do his mischievous bidding
through intimidation. His yearning to belong breeds hostility toward
the members of the Delta Riding Club. He constantly targets them as
objects of his obnoxiousness. A victim of parental neglect, Norman more
than anyone is looking to fit in somewhere.
Cord
The Delta
Riding club Native American Blacksmith. He has a Shaman’s presence.
His sixty year old body and an ancient soul give him the wisdom, the
knowledge and the responsibility of the Night Mares legend.
